| This lesson is used to introduce students to both the PowerPoint
presentation software and to the 15 concept words used repeatedly in 8th grade social
studies. It can be done towards the beginning of the year as other activities build on the
skills developed here.
Student pairs will be assigned one of the fifteen social studies concept words:
| Change |
Empathy |
Justice |
| Choice |
Environment |
Political System |
| Citizenship |
Human Rights |
Power |
| Culture |
Identity |
Scarcity |
| Diversity |
Interdependence |
Technology |
They will use a newspaper to find one article that relates to that concept.
They will prepare a 2-page PowerPoint slide show, with animation, that includes
- Word
- Definition
- A 2-sentence explanation relating the concept to a contemporary issue (they can use
their newspaper article for this if desired.)
- A graphic they can either scan in (if their article has a photo), or they can import one
of the images you have put into a file on the server for them to use.
**You will need to have an example of prepared slide show to model for them. Click for a demonstration of a PowerPoint
presentation. You will also need to demonstrate Power Point on the large monitor,
perhaps walk them through step-by step as a group, putting the word and definition on,
selecting a design format, importing graphics, and editing and animating.
These can be put into a collective slide show, to be used for reviewing the concepts
throughout the year. They can also go back and revise, to add more sentences with
each unit or idea throughout the year.
