Hurricanes

Using Word Processing to develop reading and writing skills in an integrated ELA and Science Activity. This activity develops sense of genre,(poetry and expository, jounalistic writing) flexibility and conventions of language. It should be done using a word processor.

  1. The following activity should be prededed by a discussion of verbs, and how they can add emotional meaning to a text. Students should also be familiar with differences in genres.

  2. Have students access the file on the computer. Name it "Hurricanes."

  3. They should save it as "Hurricanes student name"

  4. Once they have saved it, they should use the highlighting features to complete the activity.

Read the poem Hurricanes by Lilian Moore

Using the Highlighter on the toolbar, highlight all the strong verbs.

All night
the wind
poured
through the trees,

roared
like a waterfall,
tugged and
tore.

In the morning light
the stunned trees
looked down on

tattered leaves
heaped in
brown
hills

torn twigs
flung
in barbed wire
tangles

battered
branches
crossed like
swords.

 

Now write a short news report on the same hurricane. Think how a news report would be different from the poem.
